Trout Fishing

The name 'trout' refers to a number of species of freshwater fish. These fish belong to the salmon family. There are various kinds of trout and the different kinds are seen in different waters. As a general rule trout are found in the clear and cool streams and lakes throughout North America, Northern Europe and Asia.

Several species are also found in Australia and New Zealand. Many members of the trout family are anadromous - meaning they are spawned in freshwaters, but they migrate to the saltwater and return to the freshwaters when they are themselves ready to spawn.

Ultralight spinning reels are best suited for trout fishing. Rods no longer than 6 feet are the best so that you can keep the bait out of trees etc. While trout fishing, particular attention ahs to be paid to the bait used. The more successful bait includes worms, nightcrawlers, crickets or salmon eggs. There are chances of the trout being finicky. So, carrying a few different kinds of bait is also advisable. A small plastic worm called the TroutWorm is also reaping a lot of success. The TroutWorm should be threaded onto the hook. The barb and the bend of the hook should be exposed and the rest of the hook should be hidden in the worm itself. Wacky worming is a highly successful method of trout fishing too. Here, you stick the hook directly into the middle part of the worm. Every time you twitch the rod or turn it slightly, the worm comes alive.

The key to success when you go trout fishing is to 'read' a stream for hotspots and then present your bait in the most natural manner possible. Trout often hide in places from where they can safely watch for food or driftwood. This protects them from predators. This is usually found at the bottom of pools or in slower pockets of water around boulders, rocks or submerged wood and trees. Once you have identified a hotspot, the next step is to present the bait. Cast the bait several feet upstream of the target area. Allow the bait to naturally and gently float downstream into the target area. Slowly reel in the slack line. Usually, you should meet with success quickly. Cast 2-3 times in one area. If unsuccessful, move several feet upstream and cast again. A short tap on the line signals a bite. Once the fish bites, give it a few seconds to take the bait. Usually trout eat even the plastic worms and then just sit there. Then pull back on the rod and set the hook. If the fish you have hooked is a tough and plump rainbow or brown trout, get ready for a good battle.

The brown trout is a freshwater fish. It is a medium sized fish and may grow up to 1-5 kgs. Recreational trout fishing is widespread in North America, Australia, New Zealand and South America. The rainbow trout is also very common among anglers and are highly prized game fish. These have been artificially introduced in almost all the parts of the world except in Antarctica. Rainbow trout are found only in fresh water. Steelheads live their adult lives in the ocean. Rainbow trout is a very popular table food in Western cuisine. The brook trout is a native of streams, spring ponds and lakes.

Trout fishing picks up momentum in the spring. This is because during this season, the trout wander up and down looking for the right conditions. As Spring changes to Summer, the trout get ready to migrate. They now look for cooler waters. Reading a particular area for the trout patterns is a must in trout fishing.
