Trout Fly Fishing
Trout fly fishing is one of the best ways and the most popular ways to catch prize trout. Fly-fishing is an ancient angling method used to catch a wide variety of fish and marine species. The basis of fly-fishing is to construct artificial flies, which are tied on a hook with a thread. The trick here is to mime the favorite food of trout in the colors, shapes and sizes that will excite the trout to eat the fly. The rods that are used for fishing are lightweight and long but the lines are relatively high. The fly itself weighs very little. The fly is presented very gently and must be controlled cleverly by the angler who must not plop the fly into the water with a splash. Successful fly-fishing is as much about stealth as observation.
The Scottish highlands are the home of trout fly fishing. The River Tay, Spey, Tummel, Tilt and the Lochs like Leven, Ness are just some of the various trout-rich water resources found here. Brown trout are the dominant speacies in Scotland and are ever present in almost all natural waters. Some of the Browns found here have grown quite large feeding on smaller fish and charr, and reach over 20 pounds in weight. Anglers consider trout of 15-17 inches as very good sporting quarry. The Trout fly-fishing season begins here in March, but the going picks up in April. This is because of hatches of insects that drone at the surface of the waters lure the trout to the surface to feed. April, May and June are the most lucrative months here. In September the water cools down again and during the last few weeks the hatches occur again. In Scotland, trout fly-fishing is divided into two: rivers and natural lochs. 15 March to 6 October is the season for Brown trout fly-fishing. Aberdeenshire and River Don are great for salmon and sea trout, but it also offers first class brown trout fishing.
South Argentina is also a haven for anglers looking for trout fly fishing. Andean Patagonia is synonymous with trout-fishing. Various kinds of trout have been introduced into these waters from Europe and North America. Brown trout, Brook Trout, Lake Trout and Atlantic Salmon are found in large numbers here. Even in spite of years of stocking, the trout here still behave like wild trout, and they are an angler's dream come true. Some of the waters here are privately managed and they give away tickets for a day of good trout fly fishing. The water here are crystal-clear and gives trout fly-fishing a new twist. The trout can see the anglers and will run for cover. The trout season begins in November and goes on till April.
In Canada, Newfoundland is the home of the Humble River, which has the greatest run of salmon and trout. Most of the rivers in this area have gorges, bedrock, stone, sand, gravel, rapids and high frequency water falls. This is a Mecca for anglers looking for excellent trout fly fishing. The best season here is from June till October. Early August sees really fast trout fly fishing action. Late July to October brings you even prize fish, especially Salmon. Flies are regularly cast to catch these fish though both luck as well as skills are required in equal amounts. Newfoundland and Labrador hold more than 75% of all the IGFA records for Brook Trout. They are available throughout the season, but peak season begins in Late May through early June.
Trout fly fishing is a major sport for anglers. The trick is to observe the areas that are experiencing good fish density. Once this has been identified, the fly has to be cast a few paces ahead. This should then be allowed to float gently downstream. Trout fly fishing is a skill that one develops over the years. |
